Derbyshire Probation is one of 35 Probation Trusts, which together form the Probation Service for England and Wales, a law enforcment agency that supervises offenders in the community. The Probation and Prison Services are part of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) and work closely together. They both come under the direction of the Ministry of Justice.
Our aims are to:
- protect the public
- reduce re-offending
- ensure proper punishment of offenders in the community
- ensure that offenders are aware of the effects of crime on the victims and the public
- rehabilitate offenders
In order to be successful and to be most effective, we work with all the local authorities in Derbyshire to ensure that measures to reduce re-offending are agreed and incorporated in all Local Area Agreements. We work in partnership with voluntary and commercial organisations to deliver our wide range of services.
During 2010/11, Derbyshire Probation managed on average around 3825 offenders each month, on both community orders and on release from custody. In the calendar year 2011, we supervised 162,976 hours of Community Payback – unpaid work undertaken by offenders on projects nominated by and benefiting the local communities. This work was worth over £990,000 and many projects would not have been achieved without this assistance. More information can be found on our Community Payback page. In addition, offenders undertook over 9000 hours of induction, education or training.
