There are sexual and violent offenders in all communities. They can be any age, gender, ethnicity or position in society. Derbyshire Probation Area is committed to identifying and convicting these offenders and to protect the public from any further offences.
Derbyshire Probation Trust is one the 'Responsible Authorities' that form the Derbyshire MAPPA – Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements, along with the Police and HM Prison Service. Other agencies with a 'duty to co-operate' include Youth Offending Services, Jobcentre Plus, local education authorities, local housing authorities, registered social landlords, social services, strategic health authorities, care trusts and NHS trusts, and electronic monitoring providers.
MAPPA is governed by 4 main principles :
- identify who may pose a risk of harm
- share relevant information about them
- assess the nature and extent of that risk
- find ways to manage that risk effectively, protecting victims and reducing further harm.
A major part of MAPPA's work is the need to protect previous and possible future victims.
MAPPA is monitored by a Strategic Management Board that checks how the arrangements are working.
